Captured Wisdom is an interactive resource that is designed to help inform educators of successful practices of integrating technology into adult education instruction. Innovative, replicable activities are shown, described, and discussed by front-line classroom educators and learners so that other teachers feel that they have had an opportunity to actually visit the class and chat directly with the learners and teacher about their work together.

What is it?

Captured Wisdom documents the ways educators and learners actually use technology in their classrooms as a tool to support instruction and learning in a variety of content areas. When used as a vehicle for professional development, Captured Wisdom is especially useful for stimulating teachers to think about and question the approaches of other teachers and the ways they might adapt what they see and hear for their own local education contexts, learners, equipment, and curricular and instructional goals and plans.

Featured teachers were selected from recommendations garnered from postings on adult literacy listservs, state literacy directors, presenters at conferences, and through word of mouth. The project attempted to provide variety in the kinds of activities shown, technologies utilized, and instructional content.

To develop each of the Captured Wisdom stories, teachers and learners were filmed describing and demonstrating how they use technology in classroom-based projects. Each edited, videotaped segment was viewed by focus groups of adult educators. These educators then wrote down questions that they wanted to ask the teacher. They felt the answers to these questions would prepare them to use activities in their own classrooms. Their questions were grouped into convenient categories such as Instructional Activities, Project Management, Assessment, and Technical Issues, and were directed to the presenting teacher. Responses were tape-recorded and are included as companion segments on the CD-ROM and website. This development process assures that the implementation needs and concerns of real teachers in real adult education programs are addressed.

The model for Captured Wisdom was developed by the North Central Regional Education Laboratory (NCREL) for K-12 teachers and was extended to address the needs of adult literacy instruction by the National Center on Adult Literacy (NCAL) under the NorthCentral Regional Technology in Education Consortium (NCRTEC) project. Disseminated in videotape and CD-ROM formats, Captured Wisdom provides the adult educational community with inspiration and insight into what technology can accomplish.
